HelloFresh Canada is the Canadian branch of HelloFresh, a German company that was founded in 2011. HelloFresh is the forerunner in the meal kit industry and the very first company to expand their services over three continents (Europe, America and Oceania). HelloFresh is much the same as their Canadian competitors, they deliver a refrigerated box to your doorstep with fresh ingredients and recipe cards, all that is left for the customer to do once it is delivered is to cook.
HelloFresh’s distribution center is in Brampton, Ontario which is in the Toronto area. They currently deliver their boxes in many Canadian provinces (Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British-Colombia, Nova-Scotia, New-Brunswick and Prince Edward Island). As of today, HelloFresh doesn’t deliver in Quebec but is planning to do so.
How Hellofresh works
HelloFresh works much like their competitors. To benefit from their services, you must subscribe first, and select how many portions per meal (2 or 4) you want delivered. Each week, you can choose 3 of the 4 recipes offered in the weekly menu (you must choose exactly 3 recipes, no more no less). The ingredients are then delivered in a refrigerated box that keeps everything fresh during transportation. If you are not home when they deliver the box, it is left on your doorstep. Price per portion for a box of 3 meals for 2 people is $13.33, which is substantially higher than their competitors.
A bit of history of Hellofresh
HelloFresh was founded in Germany in 2011. Right off the bat, the company got financing from an incubator and investment fund named Rocket Internet. HelloFresh quickly developed internationally, and today the company is present in 8 countries (Germany, United-states, United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Canada and Sweden). It’s only been since 2016 that HelloFresh has been operating in Canada. On November 2nd 2017, HelloFresh made it into the Frankfort market, raising over 300 million Euros in financing.
Comparing Hellofresh
Although HelloFresh is similar to its competitors, they do have some distinctions. On one hand, HelloFresh is a more expensive: one box with 3 meals for 2 people will cost you $79.99 while their competitors offer similar options for $65. On the other hand, HelloFresh is the least flexible Canadian ready-to-cook service available, given the 3 meals per week obligation. Cook it offers a tailored service where you choose between 2 to 5 meals a week. A few competitors stand out with their extra options. For example, Cook it also offers ready-to-eat meals (to be heated) while MissFresh offers a selection of tea or coffee to add to your order. HelloFresh’s portion flexibility is limited, (2 or 4 portions per recipe). Once again, MissFresh (2,4 or 6 portions) and Cook it (2,3,4, or 6 portions) stand out with their extra options.
